Some 00 DVD News

Well, I'm not sure how, but RightStuf shipped me the first part of 00 Season 1 almost 3 weeks early, and I now have it in hand. Here's what I can tell you.

First up, I got the special edition with the first volumes of the 00 manga and 00F. A few glaring translation errors exist in 00F, such as Ian being called "Ivan" once, and Dr. Moreno from the Ptolemaios being referred to as a female. I know his name is Joyce, but he is indeed a guy. I haven't read through the 00 manga yet.

As for the DVD's, here is what I have found. First off, looks like Bandai is cutting costs as hard as possible and have shipped the first 2 discs in a single DVD case. Assuming they continue this trend, the entire series will be 12 discs in 6 cases. Compact, but I'm disappointed because it means we'll get 3 of seven covers for each half of the series, and anyone who has looked at the Japanese covers knows there is some nice artwork there.

Now, for the very disappointing news. They didn't translate the audio commentary. It isn't even on the disc. This, for me, is a huge letdown. Considering they are asking 40 bucks for the SE, to get one standard size DVD case, no insert booklet, no art box, no soundtrack, a severe lack of special features (woo! A set of trailers, "Tactical Forecasts" of upcoming episodes, and clean OP/EDs!), and just the two mangas is damn near a rip off. I can tell you this. If you don't care about the mangas, skip the SE. I still hope people will buy this because I think the severe lack of special features is proof that Bandai is hurting in this economy, and I'd really hate to see my Blu-ray rips hurt sales even further, but skip the SE unless you want the manga. My hope now is that when 00 Season 2 is finished, they'll release a box that will hold 6 discs like the Geass box.

This release doesn't give me a lot of faith in the Geass R2 release either. At least Geass Season 1 got the art box and big slate of special features, and all the mangas and audio dramas. But if they pull this same thing with R2 as they did with 00, there won't be a box or anything and that'll suck.

So, what does all this mean? Well, I'm still going to patch the existing episodes to use the DVD subs. Once that is done, I'll release a patch pack, and the batch torrent will have the updated ones, that way anyone who doesn't want to screw with patching can just download it. If there is anyone out there interested in translating the audio commentary tracks, let me know as I'd love to be able to offer them. The Geass ones have been very popular and I'm certain the 00 commentary would be as well.

The odd thing in this? Part 2 is listed as having audio commentary as a feature. So either it's an incorrect listing or they suddenly decided to do the commentary for part 2. If that's the case, I'm going to be doubly pissed.

So, that's that with the status of 00. Now lets hope RightStuf surprises me again and ships Part 2 early so we can get back to releasing 00. Until then, hold tight for FMP, which should be coming out tonight now that I solved the 5.1 problems.

Damn that sucks, but I have a question, so what exactly changes with the patches you give us, I'm just a little confused.

Thanks,
Your Fan (ROFL)

Well, it depends on the patch but I usually include patch notes. In the case of the patches for these 00 episodes, it will update them to use the DVD subtitle timing and typesetting. The YouTube subs are likely identical, but I prefer to use the ones off the DVD because I know the timing will be more accurate this way. Also, in the case of the first few episodes, it will replace the modified Menclave subs I used when I was having to transcribe the subs instead of direct rip them.

Most of the time, any other patches either fix subtitle errors, aspect ratio errors, or the lack of attached fonts which can screw up how the subs and/or OP/ED credits look.

Interesting...I just checked my order and it said its also been shipped. 3 weeks early? cool.

I just wanted to check out the 00F manga but I got the SE for $30 so its not too bad. I don't really mind the 2 dvds in 1 case if its one on each side cuz that's how my Zeta, Outlaw Star, and Silent Mobius sets are. Looking at what's included in Part 2, I'm most likely going to just get the regular edition. Here's to hoping Part 2 will have audio commentary!

Thanks for the heads up man! I'm recovering from overdosing on mecha the last few days lol because I've been marathoning G00 with my cousin who's been staying over and then we saw Transformers (fucking awesome) and Terminator right after (okay) AND I've started building my MG Unicorn.

Maybe Dr. Moreno had a sex change lol

Alright, I got it today. I was expecting to see Lockon on the cover of the SE box but it was Setsuna. Either Bandai's ads are misleading or there are 2 different covers out there. Who was on yours?
And not even reversible covers, how lame. They're REALLY cutting costs any way they can.

Setsuna was also on my cover. As you said, it doesn't match to the one it was previewed with, and I kind of expected this cover would come later, since it was the Volume 7 cover for the Japanese release.

We'll have to see who shows up on the regular edition when it hits retail.

Well, it makes sense though since Setsuna and Exia are the main character/Gundam. But I'm really bummed there isn't reversible covers like the individual Zeta Gundam dvds because with only 3 parts, there's no way you can get all 4 meisters (alone) with their unit.

This is how I would've done it...
Part 1: Cover side A - Setsuna/Exia, Cover side B - Lockon/Dynames
Part 2: Cover side A - Allelujah/Kyrios, Cove side B - Tieria/Virtue
Part 3: Cover side A - Trinity/Thrones, Cover side B - Alejandro+Ribbons/GN-X
Collector's Box: Group shot of all 4 Meisters on the side, the 4 Gundams posing on the back. I doubt Bandai would be nice enough to include a box for Part 3 but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

For the regular edition, I bet its also Setsuna and Exia because they're just releasing the dvd that was in the box separately.

I'm thinking that at this point, if we get a box, it'll be included either with the start of Season 2, or at the end of all the releases included with what will be discs 11 and 12.

I wouldn't mind that either, a box for all 6 volumes.

So what's next up now with Wing 27 released?

Well, I was working on Zeta Episode 6 but I haven't finished it and I'm going to a concert tonight, so it'll probably get finished tomorrow. I'll be doing the patches for F91 and CCA over the weekend, and FMP is ready to release as soon as I get an answer to why my ASS file corrupts when I apply this new gradient styling.

Cool, hope the FMP deal works out. Have fun at your concert tonight haha.

Omg...I just checked out the dvds and the quality of the picture transfer looks terrible, lotta blemishes and blurriness (I can't even read the damn ED credits on the TV). On the other hand, the audio sounds really good for 2ch.

Or...maybe I've just been too spoiled by HD fansubs and your awesome blu-ray releases ;)
Seriously, this kinda makes me regret buying this, but I'll do it to help support the industry and have a hard copy in my slowly growing collection.
